What do DJs actually do?
Our confused friend who went viral in 2023 wonders what a DJ actually does. We thought we would explain some of the factors that influence your quote because it's not always obvious.

Factors influencing your quote
Type of Event
The nature of the event significantly impacts DJ pricing. From vibrant weddings to dynamic birthdays and elegant corporate gatherings, each occasion demands a unique approach from the DJ. Reading a room full of adults or curating the perfect ambiance for a wedding or MCing a corporate gala require different skill sets and preparation.
Venue Considerations
The venue plays a crucial role in determining costs. Factors such as distance, accessibility, and parking availability influence the overall quote. Additionally, the size of the venue impacts the equipment required and, consequently, the pricing structure.
Guest Demographics
The number and demographics of guests attending an event. Larger gatherings necessitate a more extensive sound system and lighting setup to cater to the diverse audience preferences and ensure an immersive experience for all guests.
Performance Time
The duration of the event directly correlates with the DJ's workload and, consequently, the pricing structure. From setup and soundcheck to the main performance and teardown, we invest significant time and effort to deliver a seamless and memorable experience for their clients. For example, a wedding, planned up to two years ahead will have a greater time commitment than a small evening house party.
Date of Event
The date of the event can impact costs due to factors such as demand, availability, and special occasions. Popular dates, holidays, and peak seasons often command higher rates, reflecting the heightened demand for DJ services during these times.
Professional equipment
I use high quality audio and lighting systems because this gives my clients a superior experience in terms of performance and reliability. My sound and light show (including state-of-the-art lasers) cost in excess of £30,000.
Music Catalogue
I have purchased over 25,000 tracks for my catalogue. Anything that you would like and I do not own will incur an additional cost.
Insurance and safety
All of my equipment is PAT tested and I provide a risk assessment for all venues. I have public liability insurance and insurance for all of my equipment and can provide the certificates on request.
Professional or amateur
The distinction between professional and amateur DJs influences pricing and service quality. Professional DJs invest in high-quality equipment, possess extensive music knowledge, and prioritise professionalism in their conduct and service delivery. While amateur DJs may offer lower rates initially, they often lack the experience, equipment reliability, and professional standards that define a premium DJ service.
In summary, DJ costs are influenced by a combination of event dynamics, venue considerations, guest demographics, performance duration, event date, and the professionalism of the DJ. By understanding these factors, clients can make informed decisions and invest in a DJ service that aligns with their event vision and expectations.
